As the main load-bearing component of a guardrail, its embedment depth is directly related to the overall protection effect of the guardrail when it encounters a vehicle collision. At present, the adopted pile pulling method is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive, but also has low detection efficiency. Nondestructive testing methods include elastic wave method and ultrasonic method. According to the propagation characteristics of elastic waves and ultrasonic waves in the steel pipe columns, the non-destructive testing of the column burial depth is performed.

忠 Chen Zhong, a senior engineer of Jiangsu Provincial Transportation Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., published a scientific paper on "Methods for Testing the Buried Depth of Highway Guardrail Posts Based on Elastic Waves and Ultrasound" on "China Highway". In the article, the guardrail pillars installed on the highway are randomly selected on the spot and compared with the results of the elastic wave method and the ultrasonic method. The analysis shows that the elastic wave method is easy to operate and has high test accuracy, which can be used as the first choice for column testing.
